With the publication of E. L. James‘ erotic romance novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, in 2011, and the subsequent film adaptation released in cinemas worldwide last month, Fifty Shades of Grey was both loved and hated by large audiences.
The trilogy of novels topped bestseller lists around the world because of its raunchy material and dreamy, mysterious lead, Mr.Grey. Women went crazy. And so did critics, but for very different reasons. Whilst most loved the novels for the sexy fantasies that they unravelled, stories of sex and BDSM that women couldn’t put down, the books were also widely panned for its poor use of language.
Whilst I was among those who was largely irritated by James’ overuse of commas and repetition, The Grammarly team have reviewed the book for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, and learned that – although there were some mistakes – the errors were in alignment with similar gaffes in celebrated romances. It seems that the language of love really is a language of its own!
